Report on Hands-on Workshop on Data Analytics with AWS
November 4, 2024

The Department of Computer Science and Engineering, has organized a Workshop i.e., Hands-on Workshop on Data Analytics with AWS on 05-11-2024.The department has invited participants from 7th semester CSE.  The students of CSE have actively taken part in the workshop on Data Analytics with AWS.

FN Session: Introduction to Cloud Computing and AWS Services

Introduction:

  • The workshop began with a comprehensive overview of Amazon Web Services (AWS) and its key benefits, including scalability, cost-efficiency, and agility.
  • Participants gained insights into AWS’s global infrastructure, highlighting its vast network of data centers offering high availability and reliability.

Cloud Computing Fundamentals:

  • The workshop explored various cloud deployment and delivery models, such as IaaS (Infrastructure as a Service), PaaS (Platform as a Service), and SaaS (Software as a Service).

Understanding AWS Services:

  • The workshop explored the diverse portfolio of AWS services, encompassing compute, storage, database, networking, and management tools.
  • Participants learned about various ways to access and manage AWS resources: Command-Line Interface (CLI), web-based Management Console, and Software Development Kits (SDKs).

AWS EC2 Storage Options:

  • The workshop delved into different storage solutions offered by AWS for EC2 instances.
  • Participants learned about Elastic Block Store (EBS) and its features, particularly its suitability for persistent block-level storage.
  • The concept of Elastic File System (EFS) was introduced, highlighting its use cases for scalable file storage across multiple EC2 instances.
  • Identity and Access Management (IAM)
  • – IAM Users
  • – IAM Groups
  • – IAM Policies
  • – IAM Roles

AN Session: Advanced AWS Services

Storage with S3:

The workshop provided an introduction to Amazon Simple Storage Service (S3), a scalable and cost-effective object storage solution within AWS. Participants learned about S3 versioning, which allows them to preserve and manage historical versions of their data. The session also covered static web hosting using S3 buckets, enabling attendees to host simple websites directly from S3. Additionally, various replication options for S3 buckets were explored to enhance data availability and durability.

IAM and Database Services:

The workshop offered an overview of the wide range of database services available on AWS, addressing various needs and use cases. Participants learned how to connect an RDS (Relational Database Service) instance to MySQL Workbench, enabling them to effectively manage and interact with their databases.

The session also covered essential Identity and Access Management (IAM) concepts, including:

  • IAM Users
  • IAM Groups
  • IAM Policies
  • IAM Roles

Overall Workshop Evaluation:

The workshop offered a thorough introduction to AWS and cloud platforms, designed for participants with varying levels of experience. Through hands-on labs, attendees had the opportunity to gain practical experience with essential services and tools. The session covered key concepts in depth, including compute, storage, networking, security, and database services.
